Helio Gracie vs. Masahiko Kimura – October 23, 1951

5 Mar

“On October 23, 1951, Helio Gracie faced Masahiko Kimura who outweighed him by nearly 80 lbs. It was the first time that a jiu-jitsu world championship match would be held outside of Japan. Kimura was so confident of victory that he declared that if Helio could last for more than 3 minutes, he should be declared the winner. After 13 minutes, Kimura caught Helio in the shoulder lock that, today, bears Kimura’s name. Helio wouldn’t tap, so Carlos Gracie threw in the towel forfeiting the match to the Japanese giant. His loss to Kimura was consider one of the greatest victories of Helio Gracie’s career.”

Eddie Bravo visits Marcelo Garcia

4 Mar

People in the BJJ community have been wanting this match for years.  Eddie Bravo is best known for his win as a brown belt against Royler Gracie in Abu Dhabi in 2003.  On the other hand, Marcelo Garcia is considered by many to be one of the best pound for pound no gi and gi submission grapplers in the world.  The community has been wanting this match for so long and I’m glad it finally happened.

It’s not a tournament battle but it gives us all something to make our own conclusions on who we think would win if they ever met in competition.  Sort of like finally seeing Spiderman fight Batman in a practice match.

The coolest part about this whole thing is that they both respect each other so much and it shows.

Greg Jackson MMA Seminar Featuring Shinya Aoki

I know this isn’t necessarily pure BJJ, but Greg Jackson explains some neat shoulder lock techniques.  He moves on to breakdown the mechanics of Ground and Pound using punches or elbows.

I found this while browsing reddit.com and it made me cringe.  I was yelling, in my head, the entire time “Tap!  Tap! Tap!”.

Intense Belt Ceremony

29 Jan

I have never seen a belt ceremony before this.  I’m hoping mine is not like the one in this video.  Looks painful!

At the 1:24 mark, the real action begins.

UPDATE:  LapelChoke.com has posted a good addition to this.  A good compilation of belt whipping ceremonies.

I Got A New Gi

28 Jan

I’ve been training for 6 weeks and it’s been awesome.  There are many times where I’m feeling lazy and don’t want to go to class, but I force myself to go.  Someone famous once said that “80% of it is just showing up” and I agree.  Once I’m in the gym, I quickly forget all the reasons why I was being lazy and didn’t want to go.  I become focused on training and forget about everything else going on in my life.

After 6 weeks, I’ve decided that I’m going to stick with BJJ.  The trial period in my mind is over and I’ve decided to keep going.  I told myself that after 4 weeks of commitment, I’d have enough under my belt to make the decision.   To celebrate this new commitment, I’ve ordered and received a new gi.  Frankly, I was tired of having to wash my gi after every single session.  It quickly became annoying.  I ended up stalking BJJHQ.com and found a cheap Fuji gi for $85.  I know that Fuji isn’t the best brand in the world, but many people I know have them because they’re cheap and they get the job done.  I’ve always heard that there is very little difference between an $80 gi and a $185 gi.

So far, the only complaint is that it’s a tad too big on me.  I’m a big dude that fit the specifications of an A5 (per Fuji), but when I got the gi, it was too long and big in the arms.  I have to wash it on hot and dry it on high heat in hopes of shrinking it, but it didn’t help too much.  Oh well.  It’ll just mean that people can grip my sleeves easier which will teach me how to counter it.

Kron Gracie Explains the Beginnings of Gracie Jiu Jitsu

27 Jan

I’ve never heard Kron speak before but this video kept my attention the entire time.  He discusses many topics such as Gracie Jiu Jitsu beginnings, what specifically Helio Gracie invented, the importance of breathing, and many other topics.

At the 9:05 mark, Kron shows off some crazy stomach muscles while deep breathing
